Inclusive Fitness Classes in Plymouth: Empowering Older Adults Through Golden Moves
At Plymouth Sports Charity, we believe everyone deserves the opportunity to stay active, regardless of age or health condition. Thanks to funding from Sport England’s Movement Fund, we launched Golden Moves—a community wellbeing project designed to support older adults and those living with long-term health conditions in the Cattedown area of Plymouth.
What We Delivered
Since launching in Summer 2024, Golden Moves has delivered:
Bi-weekly adaptive fitness classes in Cattedown
Activities including chair-based exercises and gentle yoga, tailored for varying mobility levels
Our sessions have run consistently, with strong and growing attendance. The funding allowed us to cover facility hire, specialist equipment, promotional outreach, and instructor costs—ensuring a safe, accessible, and welcoming space for all participants.
The Impact
So far, over 60 participants have directly benefited from the project.
We’ve seen amazing progress in just a few months:
📈 Increased physical activity among previously inactive individuals
😊 A boost in confidence and motivation to stay active
🤝 New friendships and social connections that combat loneliness
“I never thought I’d enjoy group fitness, but now I look forward to every session. It’s helped me physically and lifted my spirits too.” – Golden Moves participant
What We Learned
Running Golden Moves taught us a lot about what works in grassroots community health projects:
Personal outreach is powerful — flyers in GP surgeries and word-of-mouth were more effective than social media
Accessibility matters — small things like offering transport support and clear signage made a big difference
Partnerships are key — working with Four Greens Community Trust and Be Unique Gym helped us reach more people and deliver better sessions
Looking Ahead
Golden Moves has laid the groundwork for a sustainable model. We’re now exploring ways to continue sessions via a low-cost membership model, and we’re training more volunteers to keep the momentum going.
We’re incredibly proud of what our team, partners, and community have achieved together — and this is just the beginning.
