Supporting Men’s Mental Health in Plymouth: Winter Wellbeing Programme Success

At Plymouth Sports Charity, we believe that mental health support should be accessible, stigma-free, and community-led. Thanks to generous funding from the Devon Community Foundation, we recently delivered a powerful initiative: our Winter Wellbeing Programme, aimed at supporting men’s mental health in Plymouth through free physical activities.

Tackling Male Isolation Through Physical Activity

Over the winter months, 42 local men joined us for weekly sessions including:

Group fitness classes

Darts tournaments

Pool matches

These weren’t just recreational activities—they were lifelines.

For many participants, our programme provided the first safe space to socialise, decompress, and open up about their struggles. In a world where men often face stigma for discussing their mental health, creating a space for connection and conversation was crucial.

Real Impact, Real Stories

We’re proud to share the impact of this project:

86% of participants reported improved mental wellbeing

81% felt less isolated

90% said they would recommend the programme to others

These results demonstrate the power of community sport and wellbeing programmes in reducing loneliness and preventing mental health crises, especially during challenging times like winter.

“I hadn’t spoken to anyone about how I was feeling for months. This group gave me a reason to get out of bed and somewhere I felt welcome.” — Programme Participant

Why This Work Matters

Suicide remains the leading cause of death for men under 50 in the UK. In Plymouth and across Devon, too many men face their struggles in silence. Our goal is to change that—one conversation, one session, one connection at a time.

Our Winter Wellbeing Programme was designed to:

Encourage regular physical activity for better mental health

Build social connections to reduce isolation

Provide early intervention and support to those at risk

Create a judgement-free space for men to talk and decompress

What’s Next?

We’re committed to continuing this essential work in Plymouth and the surrounding area. We’re actively seeking further funding to deliver year-round support for men’s mental health through sport, fitness, and inclusive community spaces.

If you’re interested in supporting our mission, partnering with us, or referring someone who could benefit, please get in touch.

Thank You

This work would not have been possible without the support of Devon Community Foundation. Their belief in grassroots community health projects helps change—and save—lives.
